Natural Stale Stone - So Unique and Alluring

Natural slate stone is nothing but the mud that has been compressed and petrified over the years. It is composed of volcanic ashes and clay with minerals like quartz, illite (mainly), chlorite, biotite, pyrite and hematite (less) that are metamorphosed into layers. It is because of the minerals that this natural stone has different colors. And because of metamorphism slate has natural veins, waves and dots that looks so unique and alluring.

Most of us prefer slate because of its appearance but besides appearance also there are many other qualities like fire resistance, acid resistance, anti slip nature, easy to work, durability, easy maintenance etc which it a further prime choice of many homeowners.

This natural stone can be spilt into layers because of cleavage and breakability. But even after splitting slate stone retains its natural texture.

There are two main types of slate stone

  • Hard
  • Soft

Hard does not break easily and last longer than the soft one.

Uses of Slate Stone

The most common is the roofing and flooring as this natural stone does not absorb water. You will find roofs made from this stone in hilly areas as it resistant to damage caused frost. Also there are very less chances of breakage because of snow and freezing. Slate tiles or shingles are used to make the roof which are installed by slater. Besides this, very creatively, it is used in the following applications.

  • Backsplash
  • Paving
  • Wall Cladding
  • Landscaping
  • Countertops
  • Stairs
  • Walkways
  • Fireplaces
  • Slate coffee tables

Besides all these, slate also has an electric insulation property. Electricity switchboards of 20th century were chiefly made from this material. It is also a chemically and physically inert material so very easily used in laboratories. Also the blackboards in your classrooms and slates that you give to your kids to write are made up of this stone.

Slate Stone Colors

It is available in varied colors but grey is the most common. Other colors can be cyan, green, purple, black and red. Mostly the geographic area from where it has been taken defines the color. But in some area you will find all sorts of colors. The most common colors are:

  • Black
  • Dark Grey
  • Greenish Grey
  • Copper
  • Purplish Grey
  • Sunflame
  • Lilac
  • Copper Pink
  • Multi-colour Golden Quartzite
  • Green Pink
  • Multicolor Dark Slate
  • Multicolor Light Slate
  • Multi Green
  • Taj Rose
  • Autumn Lilac

Natural slate stone is extracted across the world. But Wales in Europe, Vermont, Pennsylvania, New York in America, India and China are the chief location from where it is extracted.

So what you are thinking next. Remodeling your kitchen floor, backsplash or patio with this beautiful natural slate stone.

Adding Metal Tile to Backsplash Or Shower Wall

Metal tile is available in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and types of metal. They come plain or with intricate designs carved into the surface. No matter how you decide to use them in your home, there are plenty of options to select from.

Adding tile of any sort into your home decor is fun and allows your creativity to come out. You can use them in any arrangement or combination, but working with metal adds more sophistication and luxury than ceramic and glass tile just cannot create.

The most common use of tile made from metal is as an accent to the rest of the decor. They are worked into the room in a certain pattern or at very specific points in order to support and highlight other features in the room.

Accent tile is usually adorned with some kind of pattern and the type of metal should be carefully chosen so the color will work well with the color scheme of the room. There are many different types of metal to select from, including bronze, silver, and copper. Pewter is a popular material for accent pieces.

Using tile for accent can be more cost effective because you do not need to purchase as much of it. Just make sure to always purchase some extra tile just in case it is needed at the time of installation.

Another use for tile made from metal is as a focal point or mural. This is especially popular in kitchens, but can be done in any room of the home. You can either select your own tile varieties and arrange them in an interesting pattern that catches the eye or purchase a mural pattern already arranged for you.

This can be a feature of the room that pulls all of the other decor together. When done properly it can really set the mood in the room and give the allure of luxury and sophistication.

The third use for this tile is as filler. If you have an idea for your wall using other types of tile or even just small areas that may be difficult to paint or wallpaper, you can add in select metal pieces to fill small spaces where needed.

In many cases this can be done so that the metal looks as if it were originally built into the design, when in reality it was added at the last minute to hide a mistake or unforeseen problem in design.

However you use these tiles in your home, make sure to look around before making your final purchase. You should never just settle on a tile because you can't find the color or pattern that you really want. Where you put this tile and how well it blends with the rest of your room will determine whether the decor is a warm success or a strange blunder.

Metal tile can make a very dramatic addition to your home, as long as you take the time to shop wisely and work it into the overall design of the room with great care.

Guide to Picking Colors For a Kitchen

You might want to add color for a kitchen. It allows you to show off your personality. It doesn't have to be expensive and you can even do it in a rental. Here are a few tips for adding color for a kitchen.

Choose colors inspired by food. You might be sick of the basic fruit theme. This can even be a little bit cheesy. Instead, you can bring in the colors of your favorite food. Your accent color could be the bright red of cherries. This is a modern approach that gives you bright colors that are still the focal at the same time. You could do this simply by bringing in a few accessories. You can turn any glass door cabinets into display cases. Install lighting and really show off your favorite pieces of pottery and kitchenware.

Make your choices wisely. This is one of the biggest obstacles when choosing color for a kitchen. You might finally be feeling adventurous. This doesn't mean that you should just go out and buy the first bright orange countertop. That's a decision that you will have to live with for a long time. Instead find ways to bring in your favorite colors on items that you won't have to live with for decades to come. You may not regret your decision but one day one of the future homebuyers may.

Another option to bring color into a kitchen is to choose an accent tile. You may have a lot of different stones and vinyl. This can leave your room feeling pretty mismatched or hodge podge. You can tie in all the different tones and materials just by installing a backsplash. This is really an inexpensive way to put your mark on the room. For a contemporary look then go with a mosaic glass tile backsplash. This could even be a totally different color then the rest of your room by going with a daring aqua or turquoise. If you want a Tuscan or Mexican feel then try a copper colored backsplash. If contemporary is your thing then you can find different slate stone tiles complete with oranges and grays. This is an inexpensive way to really add a lot of pattern and color into your space.

You can bring almost any color into any kitchen. It's just a matter of finding balance with the items that you already have in your room. You need to be realistic about your actual square footage and the light that you have in your space. This can limit the richness of colors that will look good in your space but you can still find something dramatic that will compliment your decor and give you the look that you are after.

Reap The Benefits Of Kitchen Tiles

Apart from the variety that exists in the places tiles can be used in the kitchen, there is a wide variety of tile materials that are available too. Some of those materials include porcelain, ceramic, glass, slate, granite, quartz, or marble. Porcelain is the preferred material for countertops, kitchen walls, and backsplashes. It is resistant to scratches and comes in a variety of colors and can beautify the room.

Glass tiles are the pick of the day as they reflect light which adds to their beauty. They can be used for floors, walls, countertops, and backsplashes. If you are looking for a cost-effective alternative, then the vinyl tiles should be apt. They are best applied to floors. Suitable for floor alone, the quarry tiles are as hard as stone. When it comes to metal tiles, stainless steel ones lend a modern look while bronze or copper ones give a traditional touch.

Benefits of Tiles

Why tile is so popular in the kitchen is because of the ease involved in cleaning it. All you have to use is a sponge to wipe down almost any surface in the kitchen that has been tiled to clean it. Kitchen tiles offer a number of other advantages too - they are hard to break, non-absorbent, and resistant to fire.

The hardness of the tile helps them to withstand the extreme temperatures that you are exposing them to - either the heat from a hot pan or the chill from a frozen food are all endured by them. Additionally, you may drop a utensil on the hard tile, which can withstand this kind of impact as well. Tiling your countertop may prove beneficial in preventing a fire from spreading as they are not flammable. Also, your floor wall and countertops when tiled will not absorb odors or allergens. Apart from the functional factor, kitchen tiles can add to the attractiveness of the room also.

Choosing Kitchen Tiles

Use them to bring out the beauty of your countertops and cabinets. Unleash your creativity to mix and match colors of the tile to bring in the unique look inside.

Do up your kitchen walls, countertops, and floors in different, but complementing colors so they will add a striking look to the room. Also, choose a light color for your tile if your kitchen is small as they tend to reflect the light better and enhance the spaciousness of your room. Dark colors tend to make the room seem smaller.

Another aspect to consider while tiling your kitchen is tile size. While large ones tend to make a room look more spacious, smaller ones help create visual interest. It is wise to use large ones for floors as they provide cleaner lines. Smaller ones are great for intricate splashbacks or benchtops.

So go ahead, don on your creative caps, and mix and match tiles to give the complete look to your kitchen.

Paper Towel Holder - 3 Quick Steps to Choosing the Best Paper Towel Holder

With hundreds of paper towel holders on the market, how do you choose the right paper towel holder? Don't worry, here are 3 simple steps to help you select a holder that's just right for you.

Installation Type: First think about where you want to put your holder. If you're tight on counter space, go with either a wall mounted or under cabinet holder.. Both of these types will involve installation. Consider whether you feel comfortable drilling holes in your backsplash, wall, or kitchen cabinets.

The most popular types are paper towel stands, which are sometimes called free-standing holders. These convenient stands come in many decorative styles, and do not require installation - so there's no need for holes in your walls or cabinets.

You can also find magnetic towel holders, which are perfect if you wish to attach your towels to your refrigerator or other metallic surface. Magnetic types are especially popular for boats and RVs.

Holder Finish or Color: Now that you've decided where to keep your towel roll, consider the holder's appearance. Do you want to match your appliances? If so, consider stainless steel or chrome finishes.

How about matching other fixtures in your kitchen, such as your sink or faucet? Then a bronze or copper finish will definitely fit the bill.

If you like a rustic look in your kitchen, then you might want to consider either wrought iron or wood finishes. Another option to consider is going with a color that you like. Black and white are the two most common colors; but you can also find red, yellow, blue, and green.

Cost: Costs for towel stands and holders range from under for a plastic model, to over 0 for a designer model. The best sellers are more reasonably priced at under .

For the best selection of paper towel holders and paper towel stands, be sure to visit Only Paper Towel Holders today.

Adding Luxury to Your Kitchen

Being a south Florida general contractor, I tend to meet with a great deal of south Florida homeowners. In these meetings, kitchens are always a hot topic. Most homeowners are looking for ways to add luxury to this essential room. Sure, you can just go ahead and lay out the funds to gut and renovate the entire kitchen; but for many homeowners that is simply not a possibility. If you do not have the time or budget to tackle a full kitchen remodeling project, give one of these 10 ways a shot.

1. Cabinets

Custom cabinets are beautiful and a great addition to any home. Get a custom look by using panel inserts. These inserts can be almost any material (glass, wood, acrylic, laminate, etc.). This is a simple addition that can be installed by removing the panels of your current doors and replacing or refinishing the existing panel. To really kick things up a notch, add crown molding above the upper cabinets and why not add some soft close hinges to make doors and drawers close effortlessly!

2. Lighting

That single incandescent bulb hanging in that dated frosted globe is just not going to cut it anymore. This is another area where you imagination is your only limitation. For a sleek modern look, add lighting above and below the cabinets. Under-mounted lighting will showcase your back-splash, provide task lighting, and enhance the ambiance of the entire room. Over cabinet lighting will give the room more height, while adding a custom feel to the space. Drop in some well place recessed pots or a few pendants and you have a "million dollar kitchen" on a shoestring budget.

3. Appliances

Pastel colors are a sign that it is time to upgrade your appliances. New appliances are not only more efficient and modern; they also offer a host of features that will make your life easier. If new appliances are not in your budget don't worry, there are very effective ways of "camouflaging" your existing appliances to make them appear updated. Using a stainless steel, natural wood, or a cabinet match veneer can give a high end look for a fraction of the price and provide that elegant look that many home owners are going for.

4. Ceiling

Spruce up this often forgotten area of your kitchen by adding thermoplastic panels or natural wood beams. Pulling the eyes up to the ceiling will make your space feel grand and these accents are relatively inexpensive and many times can be installed in only a day. Even a simple paint job can give your ceilings an air of luxury!

5. Heated Floors

Heating the cold floors of your beloved kitchen will not be something that everyone can see. But there is nothing more luxurious than hopping out of bed late at night and stumbling into the kitchen to get that midnight snack without the shock of an icy cold floor to keep you awake until the sun rises. Radiant heat or electric can be used to get the desired effect, just make sure your installer knows to only heat the areas where there will be foot traffic (the base of your cabinets do not particularly care about the floor temperature).

6. Electronics

These items are the luxury that you see. Under-mounted televisions, wall panel speakers, handheld accessory docking stations. These all will make your kitchen a more tech savvy and luxurious place. These modern electric devices are ingrained into every facet of our lives; why not bring them into the kitchen. Besides, don't we all end up entertaining in the kitchen anyway?

7. Walls

Don't settle for bare sheetrock with a hint of color. Bring things up a notch with beadboard, wainscoting, stainless steel panels, brick veneers, or stone panels. Any of the wall coverings will offer texture, color, and a sense of sophistication to the kitchens bland walls. Many wall coverings can be attached using a construction adhesive or contact cement which means the installation is fast and very DIY friendly.

8. Backsplash

Use that area between your upper and lower cabinets to express yourself and add a bit of "WOW" to you kitchen. This has become an area that offers limitless possibilities. Choose from porcelain, ceramic, stainless steel, plate glass, mosaic tile, glass tile, leather, copper, fabric, or just about anything else that will stick to a wall. Installation can often be completed in anywhere from one day to over a weekend. Use contrasting colors, textures, and finishes to really make you backsplash pop.

9. Islands

Time to talk about the element that will complete change the way that you not only utilize but the way the you will view your kitchen from this day forward, Let's talk about adding or enhancing a kitchen island. This piece of real estate has been the cause of many kitchen renovations over the years and often adding one requires changing the format of the kitchen itself. It can add storage, seating, appliance space, counter space, just about anything that you want even an additional sink. Many clients have opted to go with a cook-top that is open to the seating on the opposite side and a bar-top and stools for guest or kids. This option is ideally suited for those that need an all-in-one island to not only add a luxurious touch but some function as well.

10. Countertops

Natural stone countertops have found their way into many homes over the years. Now there are a great variety of natural and man-made products on the market that can really give your kitchen a work surface that screams luxury. Onyx with up lighting is one of our personal favorites. When opting for new counters be sure that you base cabinets can support the weight of the new cabinets that you are interested in installing. Be sure that the base cabinets are anchored to the floor & wall properly and that the tops are lever. You do not want to invest in counters that will last forever if they are going to crack a few years down the road due to installation errors.

So there you go. Take these 10 ways and go wild. Remember that when you go to sell your kitchen is going to be one of the main things that get your home off the market and under a contract. If selling is not in your future, think of all the time that you spend in your kitchen and how each of the 10 ways could make that time more enjoyable.

How to Use Bathroom Tiles

Tiles can be used to give that perfect interior look to your bathroom. To spice up your bathroom various types of tiles and their design ideas are available in the market and on Internet. You can look up to magazines, advertisements, interior houses or bathroom tiles brochures to get latest ideas on bathroom tiles designs and styles. The vast color, design, size and material choice available in bathroom tiles give you enough freedom to use and experiment them at various places in the bathroom whether small or big as per your requirement.

The purpose of bathroom designing and tiling should be not only enhance the look but also turn your bathroom into relaxing and soothing space. The tiles used should be anti-skid to avoid any slip or fall and durable in nature.

Bathroom tiles material

Ceramic tiles are commonly used bathroom tiles and are available in both matte and gloss finish with vast choices in colors, size, design and pattern. They are easy to maintain and used both on walls and floors. There is vast variation in the pricing of ceramic tiles according to design, type and even brand. So you have to do little survey to see which suits best to your bathroom design and budget.

Stone Bathroom Tiles like Granite, Marble, Limestone, Slate and Travertine etc give a royal and elegant look to the bathroom. Being strong, durable and scratch proof make them popular choice but they are little costlier than their ceramic counterpart.

Glass and Ceramic Mosaic tiles are tough and need low-maintenance. You can get them in different colors and textures. They have the capability to give a designer look to your bathroom by just with little mix and match idea.

Vinyl tiles are good for floors as they are easy to maintain, durable, water resistant, warm underfoot and cheaper.

Enameled Porcelain tiles are slippery so they are preferred for the walls. They have impressive smooth metallic sheen.

Metallic Mosaic Tiles are expensive ones made of different metals such as stainless steel, brass, copper, titanium and tin. These are good if you want to give modern décor to your bathroom. They are expensive but easy to clean and available in various finishes.

Some bathroom tiles design ideas

Laying the tiles diagonally can create unique patterns. Use tiles with solid colors on bathroom floor to give warmth to the space or pastels colors that are very soothing to the eyes. For grouts you can use contrasting color like to give dark colored grout border to lighter shades tiles. It is important to properly seal the grout lines.

A themed look to the bathroom like that of sea or garden is also in fashion. Tiles with specific patterns with that of fishes or floral etc can do the wonderful job in giving a themed look. Geometrical designs and graphics, colored contrast on floor, walls, backsplash and counter tops look appealing.

Elegant and Ornate Antique Ceiling Tiles

Beautiful, ornate, antique tin ceiling tiles are very popular today and are being used as decorative accessories, wall décor, supports for artwork and of course, for home remodeling projects. These elegant and charming "collectibles" are back in vogue and continue to attract many buyers.

Ceiling tins can be found in original form or as newly manufactured products made to mimic the charm and elegance of the older looks. There are several groups of people who are eager to find tiles in their original form: collectors, homeowners and artists/crafters.

First, let us begin with a little background about tin ceiling tiles. Pressed or embossed tin ceilings were very popular during the Victorian Era as an affordable substitute for the plaster-designed ceilings found in wealthy European homes. Thin metal sheets of tin, copper or stainless steel were stamped with intricate patterns and often painted white to resemble the more expensively-produced, hand-carved or molded plaster ceilings. Companies in Ohio, New York and Pennsylvania mass produced thin metal plate during the late 1800s and created numerous patterns from which buyers could choose.

During the WW II Era, tin ceiling tiles went out of favor as metals were conserved for the war effort, and other types of ceilings were promoted. By the 1950s and 1960s, acoustic drop ceiling tiles and dry wall dominated the marketplace and could be found in homes, hotels and buildings.

Because original tin ceiling tiles have such pretty designs and craftsmanship, many people like to collect these lovely antique pieces. Collectors enjoy finding tiles of different sizes, as well as seeking out tiles with unique patterns, shapes, colors and symbols.

On online sites , these tiles are categorized under the heading "Architectural & Garden" in the antique category. Searching the words antique ceiling tins will bring you into the section where you will find early tin ceiling tiles. Using the phrase vintage ceiling tile generally calls up a list of "vintage style" or "reproduced" tiles. Prices vary according to the size, quantity and uniqueness of design. For collectible older tiles, prices vary according to rarity, availability, intricacy of pattern and whether a particular tile has been reproduced You can expect to find small ordinary tiles for as little as and fancier larger tiles or groups of tiles from and up.

With so many reproduced tiles available it may get a little tricky to tell the vintage pieces from the newer models. Older ceiling tin is heavier than the newer version and has surfaces showing lots of rust, dents, chippy paint, rough scaly edges and sharp nail holes.

Although reproductions are made to look like the real thing, you will notice that the new items are lighter and smoother and are simply too perfect. Also worth mentioning is that sometimes old tiles appear new when they are not. This can happen when a vintage piece is cleaned and refinished or an original tile is framed with an old door or window trim.

Unlike older tiles which rust, newer tiles are often made with a special powder finish which is rust-proof, allowing for indoor and outdoor use. But even "cleaned up" older tiles look and feel differently than new ones. Collectors who handle lots of these detailed works of art learn to distinguish the differences.
While true collectors mix and match their collections with different examples of tiles, homeowners who may want to remodel a kitchen ceiling or frame a fireplace need to find multiple tiles. They generally look toward new versions of these handsome decorative items.

Reproduced tiles are made from a variety of materials such as tin, vinyl, wood and plastics, and they come in numerous colors and finishes. Popular colors for store-bought tin tiles are copper, bronze, gold, black, silver, rust, burgundy, mocha and whites or unpainted for custom colors. There are many companies that carry a variet of colors and styles. A newer tile snaps locks. These tiles can be screwed into any ceiling (drop, popcorn, etc.). You can order sample tiles to evaluate before you begin a project.
While the snap-lock variety of ceiling tile is very popular, there are other innovative applications of ceiling tiles on the market today. For example, you can now purchase tiles that come in rolls like wallpaper , as well as peel-and-stick types of ceiling tiles.

Besides using tiles for the ceiling, homeowners often add tile as a kitchen backsplash or a medallion for hanging fixtures. Some creative folks even use ceiling tiles as faux headboards. Another group of individuals who look for vintage tiles is artists and crafters. These talented folks make handsome objets d'art out of these architectural salvaged masterpieces.

Many artists like to paint on vintage ceiling tiles. One artist I am familiar with, looks for tins that are more than 100 years old, in good shape and require minimal prep work. The artist I am referring to generally passes up tiles that have holes or dents, preferring instead pieces with unusual designs or shapes which inspire her to use the background as part of her subject matter and design work.

Other crafters have had great success selling frames made out of old tiles and inserting a canvas with florals and other images. While many current artists are discovering a variety of ways to use old ceiling tins and other salvage materials, the Pennsylvania Dutch have crafted objects from tin for a very long time. For example, they are noted for creating barn stars out of old tin roof material. Many stores specializing in country gifts sell reproduction stars.

Interest in architectural salvage continues to grow as collectors, homeowners and artists are falling in love with old world craftsmanship. Using reclaimed ceiling tin as decorative accessories in today's homes is an excellent way to blend older traditions with modern day lifestyles.

Kitchen Focal Points

When a guest walks into your kitchen you want them to say "Wow!" When your kitchen needs a little "Wow!" lift, there are several ways to get it. You need to plan and research to figure out what you need to get that "wow" in your kitchen. Here are some basic tips.

Empty out your kitchen so that you are looking at it as if it were the first time. This is going to take a lot of work so plan ahead and prepare meals for the day or weekend and that way you don't have to worry about it. Decide what is the first thing that sticks out to you that needs a change? You may need more color, a specific theme, or just more organization.

Having a remodeling contractor look at your kitchen could offer you some insight on the project. Ask the contractors for ideas on quick fixes and long-term projects. You need to decide what the best plan for your kitchen design and financial situation.

If your kitchen cabinets are older and lack style and convenience of today's cabinets, ask the contractor about current products. You may not need to replace the entire kitchen cabinets. Consider using cabinet overlays of different wood species, such as cherry and maple. Painting the cabinets or you may just be able to get away with just staining them.

The countertop and sink are another focal point in the kitchen. Adding a granite countertop and stainless steel sink can boost any kitchen. Keep the countertops clean and clear by placing only the basic essentials you may nee. You can add a three-canister set to the counters and one vase of flowers that will stand by the window. Don't clutter the counters with cookbooks, cooking utensils, small appliances like the microwave, toaster oven, blender, and more. Have a cabinet specifically for these items and only get them out when you use them. Place kitchen area rugs down in front of the sink. You can choose yellow rugs instead of white rugs.

The backsplash area above the countertop is also a great focal point. If you have painted walls, add an upscale stone tile with a unique pattern. Consider using copper or metal tiles as a backsplash.

Recruit the entire family to help out with the new look. Decide together on a color or style, with you having the final say so. You are the one that stays in the kitchen the most so you should also be the one that makes the final decision.

Boosting your kitchen design is fun and there are many different ways to accomplish this. Choose a couple different options and get started! Your guest's will say "Wow!" when they come into your kitchen.

Creating a new look for your kitchen is exciting and doesn't take a lot of money to do so. You are able to create a new look as often as you want but if you are going with a theme, you may want the look to last a little longer since you are investing some money in the kitchen decor and matching appliances.

Decks and Porches - Maintaining and Protecting Your Log Home

Importance of Maintaining Decks and Porches

While log home owners enjoy living within the warmth and beauty of logs, many also enjoy outdoor living which is why a large number of log homes are designed and built to accommodate decks and porches. It is equally important to take the same care and attention you give to your logs to maintaining your decks and porches. Decks are especially vulnerable during the long winter months, weathering due to pooling rain water, direct sunlight and large amounts of traffic. Annual or possibly seasonal inspections should be performed to help keep maintenance to a minimum and avoid costly repairs.

Inspecting Decks and Porches

When performing inspections of your deck, walk around looking for obvious signs of peeling stain, blistering or weathering. Look for green areas which are a sign of algae. Algae by itself are not harmful to the wood cells but are a sign of excessive moisture which can eventually cause decay. Black areas are a sign of mildew which is especially evident when the deck is wet. These areas can be cleaned with percarbonate bleach followed by a light power washing. Many log homes have porches in which the roof is supported by posts. The bases of these posts are often hidden below the deck floors and are in ground contact keeping them continually wet and vulnerable to insects. As decay sets in, these posts shorten with the weight of the roof and deck above. The roof eventually sags and expensive repairs are the result.

Protecting Lower Log Courses above Deck

Deck surfaces cause water to splash back onto adjacent log surfaces. These areas require more frequent inspections, cleaning and staining. Gutters should be installed to prevent rain water from contacting the deck closest to log walls. In addition, metal grating installed in the deck floor directly beneath roof overhang will help reduce backsplash. Flashing the lowest log course will also direct water away from the log. These lower log courses at deck level are very problematic for many homeowners and these simple steps may save expensive log replacement in the future.

Protecting Decks and Porches

Protecting your deck and rail with a quality finish is an important factor in the maintenance process. The most common sources of deterioration are standing water and direct sunlight. With proper cleaning and a quality deck finish, these situations can be greatly reduced. Many log home stain manufacturers offer environmentally friendly products to safely clean and protect your deck. Most manufacturers offer a wide range of color choices and will provide sample colors upon request.

Log Rail - A common place for log decay is at the base of the deck rails. Water tends to pool where the log rail meets the horizontal supporting log. This can be avoided by drilling "weep holes" in the bottom of the rail to allow rain water to pass through the support log and allow drying.

Supporting Deck Posts - Supporting post bases are especially vulnerable to decay because the ends tend to draw moisture up into the post. Be sure your posts sit on cement or stone footings well above ground level. Some post bases are equipped with metal risers which help keep water from being drawn into the post end.

Rail Support Posts - The top of your deck rail support posts also absorb moisture and over time will begin to decay. Post caps should be installed to eliminate this problem. Often these caps are made of copper but can be other metals or even wood.

Stairs - Deck stairs are exposed to the elements even if you have a covered porch. Stairs always end at ground level and this is where most problems occur. Make sure that the bottom of your stairway sits on a cement slab or stone base and is not in ground contact. Even with this precaution it is susceptible to backsplash. For this reason stairs require more frequent inspection, cleaning and staining.

Conclusion

Decks and porches are aesthetically appealing, provide extra living space and are great places to relax and entertain. Safely enjoy your outdoor living with continual maintenance and care using quality products and implementing these cost effective measures.

Create Safe and Stylish Kitchens With Home Water Filters and Eco-Friendly Products

No matter how big a home is, everyone always seems to hang around the kitchen. The kitchen is the central hub of a house. It's where the food is made, stored and usually where the host/hostess is holed up. But even with such a visible and important area of the home, many people go with style over substance when designing a kitchen. They forget to install home water filters, choose eco-friendly counter surfaces, and provide effective garbage disposal.

How do water filters work into your style factor? In today's eclectic design landscape, many water purification companies are making filters that are easy to conceal. Some systems fit conveniently under your kitchen work-station. Also, a good filtration device will attach easily to your current faucet. Most are easy to connect, but do keep in mind that some filtration systems need to be installed by a licensed plumber.

While the kitchen can sometimes be a gathering place for your guests, its sink is the centerpiece of activity. During the setup of your kitchen, the style of kitchen sink you choose influences the entire design of the room. Whether you go for a stainless steel industrial look or a ceramic Tuscan-inspired design, the sink will set the tone the whole room.

Aesthetics aside, it is also important to decide on a material for your new sink. To determine which type of sink is best for the safety of your family and the harmony of your home, you must know the pros and cons of each. For instance, while stainless steel is a popular choice for a modern-looking kitchen, it can be easily dented and quite noisy.

The approach to design will be easier if you think about all the features you want your kitchen to have. When you order your sink and counters, think about what kind of space you really need for your daily activities. Many home water filters can accommodate contemporary kitchen configurations and styles. In addition, decide if you will have a dishwasher or will be washing your dishes by hand. Many sinks come with two-basin configurations, making soaking and washing dishes easier.

So how do water filters work alongside dishwashers? With all the concern about the many contaminants in water, a whole house filter is becoming more widely used. This way, you can have pure water when washing clothes as well as dishes. When you think about it, home water filters that control your entire water source can help you take cleaner showers and even offer more reassurance when you are watering your vegetable garden.

Other environmentally-friendly kitchens include bamboo, recycled stone and wood. According to design experts, the latest in eco-friendly kitchens includes easy-to-grow bamboo and copper sinks. Bamboo can even be used for cutting boards, backsplashes and flooring pieces. While sink manufacturers are crafting copper kitchen products with no lead in the alloy.

So, hop on the green-living trend and embrace home water filters, recycle bins, and refurbished stone countertops in your kitchen. When you do, you can create a healthy as well as stylish kitchen that's easy on Mother Nature, too.

William Lin is an avid proponent of optimum health through high quality water sources. Break free from the typical low quality water sources by visiting William's site at Pure Filtered Safe Water to learn about his research on health through cleaner, healthier water.

Rustic Kitchen Design Ideas

Home owners can apply excellent interior design ideas to their kitchens. Kitchens can be given a more retro or a completely utopian design, whichever suits the owner's personality and preferences. Every home owner wants their kitchen to look like the one they see in the interior design magazines and templates. That dream is not difficult to achieve. A home owner can even have a kitchen that looks better than pictured demos with careful planning.

The first step is to select the kitchen cabinets. Kitchen cabinets are more than a storage space as they deliver a strong personal statement of style & taste of the home owner. Kitchen cabinets are no longer limited by design and color. There are high quality wood, fiber and various modular designs available. Cabinet design is dependent on the kitchen decor style, material, colors, door style and accessories.

The backsplash is the most prominent and exposed part of the kitchen, and can get dirty very easily. The backsplash is important and it fuses the design of the kitchen making it more prominent. When applying the rustic design, it is very crucial to choose a proper color and design in the backsplash.

Rustic Kitchen Design Ideas

The rustic design by definition is bringing together country style furniture and modern kitchen decor. It's a perfect merger of style by bringing together modern technology with classic subtlety. People will feel inside a rural environment accompanied by latest technology giving it the innovative rustic feeling.

Furniture

When choosing a rustic kitchen design, wood is the definitive choice to give the kitchen a rustic style. The kitchen design must have unity in all its elements including wooden table, rustic shade cabinets, and open wooden shelves with vintage kitchen accessories giving it the perfect rustic interior design. Rustic kitchen design ideas can be simplified but the theme should austerely be rustic.

Colors

The color scheme makes or breaks an interior design. Rustic kitchen signature color schemes are comprised of shades of red, orange and gold. Orange color is said to be the appetite stimulant and comfort maker. The floor should be distinguished with hard wood and metallic copper shades to give it a Mediterranean feel. Wall painting must illustrate the rustic design feeling.Home owners can try orange, red, shades of gold, olive green and darkest shades of Tuscan style furniture.

It's good to be bold and experimental when deploying the rustic design to your kitchen. Different color schemes like cobalt blue, burnt orange, tomato red, olive green and sunflower yellow give it a unique and personalized look. A rustic environment requires stucco walls, Venetian plasters and rough looking walls giving it an innovated vintage design. Other design schemes include iron wall decoration, iron wall grills and iron cabinets that become the focal point of every observer upon entering the kitchen.

Kitchen Decor and Design Styles

When planning your kitchen you may need some design inspiration. Choosing a style can help you make many of your selections, when you know what fits in that design style. Things like architectural details, decor, and colors can be found in the details for each design style. No matter what design style you choose in planning your dream kitchen, if you have a counter with an extended overhang you are going to need support brackets. Listed below are top design styles and some of their features. We hope this will help you in the planning and designing of your new dream kitchen.

Rustic American - Stainless Steel is an attractive design element which complements the gray tones and pewter hardware. Steel countertop support brackets can also be painted in the off white and neutral colors if you prefer to match wall color.

Color accents in grayed tones or sun-baked colors with predominately white, off-white or neutral base colors work well. Surface selections like ceramic tile, soapstone, slate and wood in a matte finish with a natural and heavy appearance are all appropriate. Pewter, rustic metals, wood and wrought iron can all be used in hardware choices. Wood finishes in oak, pine and walnut are the most popular wood species for these styles.

Modern/Contemporary -Sleek stainless steel contemporary brackets would work well in this style. This design style is an excellent complement to stainless steel countertop brackets as noted in the hardware choices below.

Stainless steel can be used as an accent color, but vibrant colors of blues, oranges, reds and yellows predominate. Recently, dark black-brown colors are becoming more popular. Surface selections would be natural stone, quartz or concrete as your best options. Nickel, chrome and stainless steel are the most appropriate for hardware. Straight grained woods such as birch, maple and bamboo are the most prevalent for wood finishes in this design style.

Traditional/Country - In this design style you may wish to use the hidden support bracket, or choose one a decorative bracket to paint in a color that falls in the categories below.

Reflect original dye colors from the American Colonial time period using reds, blues and yellows. Items containing small patterns also reflect this time period. Soapstone, granite, wood trimmed laminate and solid surface material with square edge profiles can all be used as your surface selections. Hardware choices should be rustic finishes such as wrought iron and oil rubbed bronze fit in nicely as well as copper and antique brass. Light wood finishes on maple, pine, oak, birch and cherry work well in this style.

Missions/Arts and Crafts - This style lends itself well to the metal finishes offered. Any solid built, metal bracket would be a trusted and beautiful support for your counter. Warm colors such as golden yellow, soft green, natural dyes and earth tones work in this style. Natural stone, multi-colored porcelain pottery, and the matte finish of rough earthenware materials are natural choices for surfaces. Almost any brushed finish or metal, other than brass will work with this design. Missions inspired designs use mainly items constructed of oak. Arts & Crafts designs often use cherry in place of oak today.

French Country - This style comes from France and has predominately curved lines and light colors. Several styles of brackets have curved lines that would fit nicely into this catagory. Pastels are the best choice for colors in a French Country setting. Ceramic tile backsplash areas with laminate tops that have a wood edge are appropriate. You can also use natural stone, quartz and solid surface materials. Your hardware choices would be nice hammered finishes in iron, pewter, copper or bronze. Your wood colors would be in lighter finishes such as pine, walnut, or cherry with some distressing.

Tuscan/Mediterranean - Arched openings and heavily plastered, oversized rooms along with vibrantly painted tile murals, and dark wood balanced with soft edged stone surfaces help define this style. Hidden brackets would lend themselves well to this design style for counter overhangs. Olive green and terra cotta have a definite Italian feel to them as do warm colors in yellows, oranges and reds balanced by blues and greens. Granite with an active pattern and other rustic patterned surfaces are appropriate in this style. Italian environments support the use of metallic surfaces beyond hardware but in most cases, rustic metals and crackled finishes on porcelain are excellent selections. Heavy woods with strong grain work well in this setting. Painted finishes should be worn through and distressed.

Victorian - Medieval motifs such as stylized floral patterns, filigree; lancet arched windows and leaded glass panes are part of this design style. Any bracket in cold rolled steel material could be painted in the dark colors that go so well with this time period. A black powder coat would provide a beautiful supported counter. Golden tones along with olive green, black and burgundy can be used as your color palette. Ceramic tile, granite, and wood are all appropriate for surfaces and hardware could be ceramic or marble, you will typically see ornate polished brass. Heavy dark woods are commonly used such as mahogany, blackened oak, walnut, satinwood or rosewood for your wood finishes.

Transitional - Is a relatively new style combining Modern/Contemporary with more Traditional Old World design style, creating a bridge between the old and the new style. Brushed metals would be very common sight in this style. Stainless steel brackets have become very popular, come in various styles and are a perfect match in this setting. While colors in the contemporary style tend to be bright and bold, more subtle colors or a combination of colors lean more towards the tradition style. Combining granite or quartz with wood accent areas would help define a transitional space. Brushed metals, oil rubbed bronze or wrought iron finishes will all work. Tight grained woods such as maple, birch and cherry can be used.

American Shaker - Defines a woodworking style that is beautifully executed and simple in detail. The Shaker's homes were multipurpose rooms and they hung chairs on pegs along the outer walls so floor space was available for other activities. This style lends itself to beautiful wood décor. A strong metal L bracket with a wood facade provides the sturdy strength of steel with the beautiful wood look to match this design style. Colors range from pinky tones and terra cotta earth shades, through yellow ochre and olive green, to greenish blues and denim. Granite, limestone, slate and square-edged solid surfaces are all appropriate for surface finishes. Wood pegs are the most authentic in place of hardware. You can also use simple metal or hand-forged finishes. Predominate wood choices include maple and cherry. Warm or medium range wood tones are appropriate.
